{"id":125,"date":"2019-02-21T11:48:26","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T11:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/k9massage.im\/?page_id=125"},"modified":"2019-02-21T11:48:27","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T11:48:27","slug":"contraindications","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/k9massage.im\/index.php\/contraindications\/","title":{"rendered":"Contraindications"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Contraindications to massage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are conditions, circumstances and situations that are contraindicated for massage, when massage to a dog should not be given, or should be adapted as appropriate.&nbsp; If you have any concerns about any of the following, or anything else, please discuss these with us first :-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.\tA dog with a temperature exceeding 104\u00b0F (39.5\u00b0C).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A dog\u2019s normal temperature is around 101 \u2013 102.5\u00b0F or 38.3 \u2013 39.2\u00b0C.&nbsp; An increase in temperature would indicate serious illness and would usually accompany other clinical symptoms such as lethargy, off its food, depressed, etc.&nbsp; A dog with feverish conditions should be given complete rest and referred to a vet.&nbsp; Massage would only worsen its condition by increasing an already accelerated blood circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.\tA dog that is dehydrated, fatigued, panting or out of breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.\tA dog suffering from shock or that has just been involved in an accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dog\u2019s body will be adjusting itself and the pressure of massage could do more harm than good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.\tA dog suffering from Epilepsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5.\tA dog which has broken or fractured bones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6.\tA dog suffering from heat stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7.\tWhen there is an open (broken skin) or healing (bleeding) wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tThat particular area should be avoided, although massage to the remainder of the body may be beneficial to release compensatory tension or excess swelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>8.\tWhen there is an acute trauma such as a torn muscle or an area with internal bleeding such as an acute hematoma following a strong blow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tImmediate veterinarian evaluation should be obtained.&nbsp; Ice can be used in the acute phase, massage can resume in the chronic stage (after 72 hours)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>9.\tAcute Sprain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10.\tAcute nerve problems or nerve irritation (neuralgia) in a particular area following a wound or a bad stretch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11.\tDuring colitis, diarrhoea, pregnancy or hernias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>12.\tTumours and cysts of cancerous origin are contra-indicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tThe affected area should be avoided but the rest of the body should be acceptable to massage.&nbsp; Veterinary advice should be obtained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>13.\tMassage is formally contra-indicated for skin problems of a fungal origin such as ring-worm and bacterial skin disease, as massage may spread the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>14.\tMassage should also be avoided during the acute stage (the first 24 hours) of any infectious diseases to avoid spreading the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>15.\tOver areas of fresh inflammation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\n<p>Contraindications to massage<\/p>\n<p>The following are conditions, circumstances and situations that are contraindicated for massage, when massage to a dog should not be given, or should be adapted as appropriate.&nbsp; If you have any concerns about any of the following, or anything else, please discuss these with us first :-<\/p>\n<p>1.
